Happy New Year, everyone!
So sorry for the radio silence this last week. We took the first week of the year off to continue to enjoy family and friends – and frankly, stay out of these freezing temperatures.
Shawn and I did have an opportunity to break out this last weekend for a really fun holiday winter date night in the city. We switched up our New Year’s plan by coordinating a New Year’s Eve Eve celebration.
Y’all, I cannot say enough great things about both experiences.
Let’s chat first about The Christmas Carol at The Goodman Theater.
The Goodman Theater is such a wonder Chicago landmark with an incredible history. The theater itself is smaller and so quaint. Any seat in the house is fantastic. And, Shawn and I both were blown away by the production.
The evening Shawn and I attended the plan, The Goodman Theater had put on a sensory friendly version of The Christmas Carol. Sensory-Friendly/Relaxed Performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is intended for families with members who have autism or other social, cognitive and physical challenges that create sensory sensitivities.
Accommodations for the sensory-friendly performance includes:
- Lower sound level, especially for startling or loud sounds
- House Lights remain on at a low level during the performance
- A reduction of strobe lighting or lighting focused on the audience
- Patrons are free to talk and leave their seats during the performance
- Designated quiet areas within the theater building
- Space throughout the theater for standing and movement
- Limited crowds and visitors at Goodman Theatre during the day and timing of the performance
- Goodman Theatre staff trained to be inviting and accommodating to families’ needs.
It was truly wonderful to see this dedication from the venue – and to see so many families enjoying this wonderful holiday celebration.

After the play, the winter date night festivities continued at one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago, I|O.
Y’all, I don’t even know where to begin to tell you all the great things offered at I|O.
If you follow us on Instagram, you may have seen this past weekend the fabulous food, cocktail and really fun outdoor igloos currently featured at I|O.
The staff and management at I|O always do a really incredible job with the handcrafted cocktail and food menu – as well as the great utilization of their outdoor rooftop. It’s always rooftop season at I|O. Weather or not, the patio is always open with breathtaking views of Chicago.
If you’re looking to entertain out-of-town guests, business associates or just looking for a unique winter date night idea, don’t look any further than I|O.
For dinner, Shawn and I chose to go with the Trust The Chef special. It’s a fantastic way to experience a little bit of everything from their menu and meant to serve 2-4 people. It’s definitely a lot of food so I suggest going with another couple or friends to really enhance the experience.
With Trust the Chef we sampled:
- Shrimp Tacos
- Lamb Lollichops
- Godfrey Maki
- Market Place Ravioli
- Salmon Filet
- NY Strip
Seriously yum! Go out on a limb and allow the chef to chose your cuisine during your next visit. You will not be disappointed! Visit here for their full dinner menu.
