Guys, I am going to admit, I was initially on the fense about the mom short trend. When I first placed an order for these cute denim shorts I wondered whether they would age me a bit and make me feel more like, well, a mom.
Jessie (my mom) had these almost exact highrise denim mom shorts in light blue growing up and while I loved them on her I wasn’t sure whether I’d love them for myself. That was until they arrived in the mail.
Once I had them on I quickly realized these light wash denim jean shorts were not only going to pair well with lots of things in my closet, but were in fact going to be on heavy rotation all Spring and Summer. What I love most about denim mom shorts is they can be dressed up or down. Today, we’re excited to bring you just a few of the many ways to wear denim mom shorts.
Before we get into the many ways to wear, I want to first talk about fit and what we like about these mom fit shorts over traditional denim shorts.

WHY WE LOVE DENIM MOM SHORTS
- First and foremost, I love the fit. I purchased these particular mom shorts from Mango, but I have also purchased a number of highwaisted mom shorts this season from Abercrombie. These denim shorts, and the ones from Abercrombie, are more of a highrise denim short (or high waisted) and are fit well for a curvy body type.
- One of the questions I get the most is ‘Are mom shorts good for big thighs?’ and the answer is yes, definitely. I have a more athletic build with a slightly smaller waist, but thicker thighs. Traditional denim shorts have a tendency to fit me in the thigh area when I size up, but are far too big in the waist. With these denim shorts, and the option from Abercrombie, there is plenty of room in the leg and fit perfectly at the waist. Both are great curvy shorts options.
- I really enjoy the length. The traditional denim shorts in my closet are almost always super short and feel borderline inappropriate for my age these days. The mom short style, however, is a longer length – often 4″ hems or longer. I find the longer length is stylish and versatile.

WHAT TO WEAR WITH MOM JEAN SHORTS
As I mentioned above, there are so many great ways to style mom jean shorts. They are the perfect shorts to take you from brunch to date night. In the we are sharing today, we wanted to incorporate pieces you likely already have in your closet. Here are just a few of our favorite ways we love to wear mom jean shorts.
A BLACK BLAZER
If you are looking for a way to dress up your mom shorts, a black blazer is the way to go. I love this oversized option from Mango, but any black blazer will do. Throw on a white tank, black tank, graphic tee, some gold or silver jewelry and either sneakers or heels and you have a pulled together look for brunch with the girls or date night with the beau.
A GRAPHIC OR BAND TEE
You can never go wrong pairing your jean shorts with a great graphic tee or band tee. Throw on your favorite sneakers, a cross-body belt bag and you’re good for a weekend on the go. Graphic and band tee’s don’t need to break the bank either. You can often find cute, affordable options at Nordstrom, ASOS and more.
A WHITE TEE, TANK OR BUTTON DOWN TOP
Thanks to the recent stay at home orders, I have pulled out my classic white tees, tanks and button downs as often as I have my favorite PJ’s. What I love about a white tee or tank is they can literally be paired with just about anything. Dress them up by pairing your mom jean shorts with a blazer and heels or thrown them together with flats, sandals and a statement bag for a slightly more casual, but classy look.
I also love to pair my classic white tops with a baseball cap and sneakers!
BLACK TANK OR TEE
Similar to our sentiments about a good white tee, you can also never go wrong pairing your mom shorts with a black tank or tee. These, too, can be dressed up with a tan or plaid blazer and heels or dressed down with flip flops, tan sandals, or sneakers. This season we have become big fans of belt bags. We love pairing this staple accessory with our denim shorts cross body style.
TIE DYE
While we didn’t get around to styling these cute highwaisted mom shorts with a cute tie dye top, we do love the style pairing! The tie dye trends seems to be just as popular with so many cute top styles on the market. We particularly love these jean shorts with a cute pastel colors tie dye tank!

WHERE TO BUY MOM SHORTS
With the mom jean short trend hot this season, there are a number of great places to shop affordably. Here are just a few of our favorites with details on sizing, etc.
MANGO
Mango has been one of my favortite places to shop for mom jean shorts and beyond. The pair we are styling here are less than $40 and available in two shades of denim – including a medium wash. The Mango collection offers a number of different mom shorts options including highrise mom shorts, 4″ hems, black denim shorts, midi shorts and more. In terms of sizing, I would recommend sizing up at least one size. I typically wear a size 4 or a 6.
ABERCROMBIE
If you asked me last year whether I was a fan of Abercrombie denim shorts my answer would have been ‘no’. I typically find their denim shorts are too short, too distressed and did not fit well. That was, however, until I tried their highrise mom shorts this year. Not only do they come in a number of different colors – they now come in a curvy mom shorts fit, 4″ hem and are high waisted jean shorts.
As of today I own them in almost every color – including washed black denim and white denim. If you prefer, you can also find low rise shorts options, paperbag waist denim shorts, medium wash, raw hem, more ripped denim and womens jeans available.
I will say, the different colors do have a tendency to run at different size. I own the black jean shorts in size 27, but purcahsed the white and blue 4″ hem mom shorts in size 28. I would recommend checking out their size guide to get the fit just right for your body type.
MADEWELL
Madewell offers a few womens denim shorts and mom jean short options in light wash, black denim and white. They are available with comfort stretch material which makes them cozy and soft fit for long wear, as well. Madewell sizing goes quick so be sure to get your hands on their mom jean shorts quick! As with many of the other retailers below, I’d recommend checking out the reviews for feedback and their size guide to get your fit just right.
H&M
If you are looking for really affordable mom short options, look no further than H&M. They have a number of fit and color options available – including curvy shorts. Their mom jean shorts are also under $20! In terms of sizing, I typically wear size 4 or 6 in H&M. You’ll find midrise denim shorts, high waisted shorts, vintage denim options and more.
Also, if you’re into the bike short trend H&M has some really cute affordable options to try, too!
TOPSHOP
Topshop has a really extensive list of mom short options ranging in terms of fit, amount of distressing, pleats and cost. You can find high waisted mom shorts, a range of color options all at less than $60.
ASOS
Similar to Topshop, you can find more than 20+ mom short options all at really affordbale prices. Their selection is available in multple colors and fits. ASOS also offers extended sizes, too!
ZARA
Zara has quite a few options for mom shorts ranging in color of denim and including black denim. They appear to have a very similar fit to the Mango denim shorts we styled here. Not to mention they options at Zara are really affordable. I typically wear a small or 27 in Zara shorts.
