Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablets (3-ounces) Mexican chocolate, cubed (if needed, you can also use 1/4 cup cocoa powder)
  • 3 cups milk (you can also use condensed milk or whole milk, if preferred)
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (feel free to also use almond extra for an even more rich flavor)
  • 1 tablespoons brown sugar (optional.  feel free to add more, if preferred)
  • Small pinch of cayenne pepper or ground chile de arbol (optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks for stirrers (optional)

Instructions

  • In a small sauce pan, add water and chocolate.  Stir regularly as chocolate begins to melt.
  • Once the mixture is almost to a boil (do not actually bring to a boil), add sugar and stir until well combined.  Reduce heat.
  • Add in milk, vanilla extract, brown sugar and cayenne pepper.  Stir together with a wire whisk until well combined.
  • Using a laddle, scoop the hot chocolate into a mug and add all your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • If you’re interested in making this recipe into a cocktail, simply add Rumchata or other alcohol of your choice.
  • Also, I recommend giving the hot chocolate recipe a taste before serving.  Want it with a little kick?  Feel free to add an bit more cayenne pepper or nutmeg.  Prefer your hot chocolate even more sweet?  Feel free to add some sugar!  Regardless, this winter cocktail will taste great!
