How To Style a Trench Coat

A Lily Love Affair shares how to wear a trench coat for Fall with jeans and red heels

Spring in Chicago can be a real emotional roller coaster. One day is sunny and 70 and the other you can expect feet of snow. With the frequent change in weather, I think an absolute Spring closet must have is a classic trench coat.

I’ve owned a number of trench coats over the years, many of which I have had in my closet for years. A few weeks back during the Banana Republic Friends & Family Sale, I made the decision to invest in another classic trench coat, this time, in a slightly shorter length.

What I love about this trench coat over other’s I’ve owned in the past is 1). the material is made with a soft cotton material, but with a soft coating that will easily repel water when it rains 2). it comes with a fantastic detachable lining for cooler temperatures. It’s unlike any other and does not give it a ‘bulky’ feel. I am so excited I made the decision to invest in another.

Trech coats can often times be pricey, no? With the current sale running at Banana Republic, the now 40% off makes it a great time to buy! Plus, if you’re a Gap, Banana or Old Navy card holder, you can save an additional 10% off your purchase. What are you waiting for? Head there now!

Oh, I forgot to mention a few other important items. The coat comes in misses, petites and tall – perfect for any body shape. I initially purchased the jacket in a misses XS since it had the liner, however, I ended up exchanging it for a petite XS as I found it ran just a tad larger than most of my Banana Republic coats. Just a heads up. Now, let’s chat about this amazing gingham off the shoulder top – now also 40% off!

Have you invested yet in a classic trench coat?

Banana Republic Trench Coat || Banana Republic Gingham Off the Shoulder Top || Red Suede Heels || Sole Society clutch (no longer available) || Gap Denim || J.Crew Sunglasses (now on sale!) || Daniel Wellington Small Cuff

I mentioned in last week’s off the shoulder top craze post (seriously, definitely check it out as there are some really great tops starting as inexpensive as $15. Go!) that you’d be seeing a lot of the off the shoulder trend here on the blog. It might be my favorite at the moment. This gingham off the shoulder is no exception, y’all. I chose to wear with jeans this weekend, but this it will be equally chic with a great white skit, or even slacks.

Y’all know how much I love color so I couldn’t resist pairing the top with a good pop of red. Did I mention this top will be so cute, too, over the July 4th holiday? I can’t wait to style it 100 new ways this Spring and Summer. It’s simply irresistible.

  1. Gingham looks good on you girl and you’ve got me OBSESSED with this clutch! Every year I intend to pick up a classic khaki trench coat and forget, so thanks for the reminder.

  2. I do not have a trench coat. I’ve always had trouble finding one that worked with my height (or lack of it!) being only 5 foot tall. I do think they are so stylish though.

  3. I love your outfit. I haven’t invested in a trench coat just because in Houston it’s so darn hot almost all the time. If I lived somewhere a little cooler that would be at the top of my list for investment pieces. I love your off the shoulder top, with the red heels.

  4. Love the mix of prints going on here! Such an adorable top and everyone should have a classic trench like this in their closet!

  5. This is such a classic look with a modern updated twist. The classic trench, gingham (duh such a classic) the skinny jean (love the raw hem) and the classic red heel…..obsessed!!!!

    xo!
