WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO MAKE SANGRIA AT HOME?

There are two ways we love to make sangria at home: in large batches in a pitcher for large parties like 4th of July or mason jar sangria for smaller gathers, camping cocktails on the go, and more.

Glass mason jars are great containers for sangria because they have a wide mouth, they’re easily transportable and it’s easy to add fruit! Also, they’re made of thick glass that can withstand pressure and keep your drink colder longer.

KEY INGREDIENTS FOR MASON JAR SANGRIA

  • WINE – we love red wine sangira most, but you can also use your favorite white wine or even rose.
  • FRUIT – fresh fruits such as grapes, pears, apples and not only really help sangria taste alive, but they also add a confetti of great colors to this easy cocktail. I like to squueze an orange, lemon and/or lime into the recipe to add natural sweetness.
  • JUICE (optional)– If you’d like to add additional natural sweetner, we like to add a few ounces of orange juice to each mason jar. If you’re making this recipe in a larger container like a pitcher, consider adding 1/4 cup or so. Adding additional juice is entirely optional.
  • ALCOHOL (optional)– If you are looking to add a bit more flavor and up the alcohol content in your mason jar sangria, consider adding an orange liquer like Brandy or Cointreau. Brandy or Cointreau will also help round out the flavors in the sangria.
  • SWEETENER – If you’re looking for even more sweetener, feel free to also add a half to one ounce of maple syrup, strawberry syrup or simple syrup. We have tried this sangria recipe with and without sweetener and both turn out great.

BEST WINE FOR SANGRIA

Because sangria hails from Spain, we love to include a rich, bold Spanish red wine in our sangria recipes. Garnacha and Pinot Noir are naturally fruity and low in tannins. There are a number of affordable Spanish wines you can choose from such as

Don’t have a Spanish wine on hand? No problem! We also love other red wines including cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir or zinfandel.

BEST FRUIT FOR SANGRIA

For sangria, we love to mix and match a variety of seasonal fruits like apples, pears, grapes, berries, pineapples, etc.

Also, the more fruit the better but avoid large amounts of citrus rinds if you intend to allow your mason jar sangria to sit for a long period of time. A large amount of citrus rinds can make the flavor bitter over time. We love to use oranges, lemons and limes.
