MONKEY BREAD MUFFIN RECIPE
Say hello to the most incredible fall breakfast you’ll serve this season. You and your family will not be able to resist this delicious simple monkey bread muffin recipe!
I made this monkey bread muffin recipe with apples (you can choose any of your favorites), but it would be just as delicious with other fruits such as mixed berries, bananas, or peaches.
Also, I highly recommend adding walnuts and/or pecans (pending there are no allergies you need to be concerned with). The nuts in this recipe were a last-minute add, but I am so glad we did. It added a good amount of extra flavor and crunch. If you’re feeling extra wild, you can also top the recipe with heath or caramel crunch and a scoop of Hudsonville Seasalt Caramel Ice Cream. YUM!
Hudsonville’s Seaside Caramel ice cream is made with caramel sea salt truffles and a silky ribbon of salted caramel swirl into creamy vanilla ice cream for the perfect combination of sweet and salty. What’s not to love?

WHAT IS MONKEY BREAD?
Monkey bread is a sweet bread made of small chunks of dough coated in cinnamon and sugar, baked together in a Bundt pan or muffin tin.
While there’s no consensus on how it got its name, one common explanation for the name is that when the balls are turned out of the pan they resemble a bunch of little monkeys hanging from a tree limb.
MONKEY BREAD MUFFIN INGREDIENTS
- CINNAMON ROLLS – To make this monkey bread muffin recipe easy and straight forward we used canned cinnamon rolls. Use this homemade cinnamon roll recipe if you are looking to make this recipe from scratch.
- BUTTER – We like to use salted butter, but unsalted will do as well.
- CINNAMON – lots of ground cinnamon please!
- WHITE SUGAR
- BROWN SUGAR
- APPLES – We love to use a combination of Granny Smith Apples and Honeycrisp Apples, but feel free to use any of your liking. You can also omit the apple ingredient all thogether if you prefer.
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS INCLUDE:
- Chopped walnuts
- Chopped pecans
- Maple syrup
- Hudsonville Ice Cream (their Seasalt Caramel, French Vanilla, Mackinac Island Fudge and Caramel Deer Traxx ice cream flavors will pair perfectly with this recipe!)
HOW TO MAKE MONKEY BREAD MUFFINS
To start, cut the canned cinnamon rolls into small chunks, 8 pieces each. Next, cut a large apple into chunks.
In a mixing bowl, combine cinnamon roll chunks, apple chunks, sugar, and chopped walnuts (optional). Toss all of the ingredients until well combined. If it’s easier, you can also add all of the ingredients to a Ziplock bag, seal, and shake well until all ingredients are combined and cinnamon rolls are well coated.
Spray your muffin tin with non-stick cook spray. Place the coated cinnamon roll chunks into the pan, pressing down lightly to ensure the mixture fits in each muffin pan tight.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place the now filled muffin pan in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the tops of each muffin are lightly golden brown.
Remove the muffins from the oven and set them aside to cook completely for about 10 minutes. When you are ready to serve, drizzle with maple syrup or cream cheese frosting and top with a creamy scoop of Hudsonville Seasalt Caramel Ice Cream!
Serve and watch your family come running back to the kitchen for seconds or thirds!
TIPS FOR MAKING MONKEY BREAD
- Mix together the cut up cinnamon rolls with the other ingredients until well coated. If you don’t you will end up with clumps of cooked cinnamon rolls instead of ooey gooey monkey bread.
- While I added apples to this Monkey Bread recipe, it can also be made with other fruits such as blueberries, peaches and bananas.
- For added flavor, I recommend adding pecans and walnuts to the recipe. I threw them in on a whim and was so happy that I did! They really added a nice touch. The deep flavor and crunch were great in contrast to the sweet and soft cinnamon rolls and apples.
HOW LONG IS MONKEY BREAD GOOD FOR?
Monkey bread can be kept at room temperature for up to three days in an airtight container.
WHAT CAN I USE IN PLACE OF A MUFFIN TIN?
If for any reason you do not have a muffin tin handy you can also use a bundt pan or a small baking dish (preferably 9×9 or smaller).
HOW DO YOU STORE AND REHEAT MONKEY BREAD?
You can store and reheat your monkey bread in a few different ways.
The easiest way to store it is in an airtight container at room temperature. If you need to make this ahead of time then putting it in the fridge will help keep it fresh longer even when you take it out and reheat it.
And, when you reheat monkey bread, preheating your oven to 350°F, covering the pan with aluminum foil, and placing them in there for about 15 minutes should do the trick.
MY FAVORITE HUDSONVILLE ICE CREAM FLAVORS
We have never tried a Hudsonville Ice Cream flavor we didn’t absolutely LOVE. However, below are just a few of our favorites:
- Mackinac Island Fudge – a delightful mix of butter fudge and fudge chunks blend perfectly into their vanilla ice cream.
- Deer Traxx – made with a mix of mini peanut butter cups, thick chocolate fudge and creamy vanilla ice cream.
- Brownie Batter Cookie Dough – two classic desserts combine into one amazing ice cream! Brownie batter ice cream is churned with not one but two inclusions: cookie dough chunks AND brownie bites. YUM!
