TIPS FOR MAKING INSTANT POT MEATBALL SUBS:
- When you are cooking the Italian meatballs and onions, be sure to stir regularly to ensure the meatballs and veggies do not stick to the bottom of your Instant Pot. Doing so will ensure you don’t get the ‘Burn’ notice when you pressure cook the recipe.
- This meatball sub recipe really delicious and family friendly. Below, we are sharing thoughts on how to make this easy meal vegetarian friendly. Either option is so delicious!
- For this recipe I used pre-made, store bought Italian meatballs, but you can use bagged ground beef or turkey meatballs that will work great, as well.
Can I use frozen meatballs?
You certainly can, yes! I do prefer fresh or homemade meatballs for this recipe, but frozen meatballs will absolutely work! If you do choose to make this meatball sub recipe with frozen meatballs, you will want to increase the pressure cooking time by 3 minutes.
It’s also worth noting when using frozen meatballs it will take the Instant Pot a few additional minutes to come to pressure.
Want to make your meatball subs plant-based or vegetarian friendly?
If you are looking to make this recipe a gluten-free, vegetarian and/or plant-based friendly, simply replace the above ingredients as mentioned below.
- Meatballs: swap out your ground Italian meatballs with a plant-based alternative like Beyond Meat or Pure Farmland. This was our first time trying the Pure Farmland Italian style meatballs and I was really impressed. They pack 14 grams of protein with each serving and had a great natural flavor.
- Hoagie Roll: The next time we make this delicious meatball sub recipe, I’d love to try replacing the hoagie roll with a gluten-free option.
- Parmesan Cheese: Swap out the Parmesan cheese for a dairy-free option. There are a number of good options at Whole Foods, Aldi and Target.

//
HOW TO MAKE MEATBALL SUBS
- Turn on your Instant Pot and select the ‘Saute’ function on high.
- Add olive oil and onions and saute until onions are slightly softened. Add garlic and saute for an additional 2-3 minutes. NOTE: be sure to move the contents around in the Instant Pot regularly to ensure they are not sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- Select the ‘Cancel’ function to reset the cooking function. Add tomato sauce or pasta sauce from the jar to the bottom of the Instant Pot and then add the Italian meatballs.
- Add garlic pepper, Italian seasoning and pinch of red pepper flakes (optional).
- Secure the lid on the Instant Pot. Select the ‘Pressure Cook’ function on high and cook for 10 minutes.
- While the meatballs are cooking in the Instant Pot, toast the open face of your hoagie rolls with butter on the stovetop in a large skillet. I like to use butter sprinkled with a bit of garlic powder. Once they are taosted to your liking, put aside. You can also place the buttered hoagie buns in the oven to toast, as well, if prefered.
- Once the timer beeps, allow to naturally release pressure for 10 minutes then quick release all remaining pressure.
- Stir contents and serve meatballs on a tasted soft sub roll topped with Parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
- Serve and enjoy!
